It didn't take novelist Sam Barnes long to find an excuse to escape the punishing Toronto winters for the attractions of sunny Mexico. Responding to a surprise suggestion from old friend Kevin Watts to help track down a missing and reportedly valuable 17th-century treatise on the ancient Mayan language and culture, Sam arrives in Mexico only to discover that matters are not how they originally seemed.Art agent Maria Alvarez, long-time girlfriend of Sam's old Mexican friend Manuel "Pancho" Bandilora, is faced with her own personal challenges, but soon joins Sam on his quest for the treatise. Their search is sceptically aided and supported by Sam's uncle and literary agent, Harry Oliver, and Fine Art Dealer Dependability Jones ("DJ").From Toronto to Mexico City, from the beaches of the Yucatan Peninsula, and from London back to Toronto, a series of surprising twists eventually lead Sam to more discoveries than he bargained for.

Following a successful 40-year career in the fields of Information Technology, Human Resources Management, and International Trade, Michael MacNeil returned with his wife to his native Nova Scotia to pursue a long-held desire to write.

He and his wife have one grown son, now with his own growing family.

This is his first novel.
