The author is a miner's son born in a mining colliery in northeast England. He enjoyed his time, 1947 - 1949, in the RAF. Allan qualified as a vet in 1954 at Liverpool University. The author then worked as a veterinary assistant until 1960 in Bridlington, Stockton, and Barnard Castle. He began his own practice in Peterlee in 1960. Allan has always been interested in history, in ballroom dancing since 1949, and in gardening since 1960.
