"The Reckoning of Jack The Ripper" written by Mark Barresi is a KILLER of a book!
It's an excellent and entertaining take on who 'Jack' actually was, incorporating a hunt for a modern day serial killer targeting young women in San Diego.
We know from the start who the actual modern day killer is and why he is recreating the murders of Jack the Ripper, this doesn't spoil anything for you as a reader as there are many twists - with the storyline continuing four years later after a major event regarding the killer.
Dedicated Detective Ed Brooks is on a determined mission to capture the modern day copycat killer dubbed the 'Entity' - but can he keep his family and colleagues safe and will the killer see Ed as the ultimate kill? As the body count rises will the task force piece together the pieces of the puzzle before the 'Entity' strikes for the final time?
There's an excellent high speed, adrenaline fuelled car chase during the book that has you on the edge of your seat and during the second half of the book there is action galore leading to a deadly cat and mouse game with a shock ending I didn't see coming.
The murders of the girls are quite brutal so be aware of violence throughout but all are a necessity to the plot and shouldn't offend, especially if you already know the history of the ripper victims.
I really enjoyed this book, I've always been fascinated by the stories of who Jack the Ripper actually was and the crimes he committed, so I knew I would like the story, however, you don't have to know about the Victorian murderer to still enjoy this book, as it's a cracking crime novel that keeps you fully entertained until the exciting end.
