Blowing up a wasps' nest, preparing a field with an ancient tractor, burying an Austin Seven - if you thought landscaping and nursery work was straight forward then think again. In A Slice of Life David G. Cox takes the reader on a gentle journey working on the land with his father and his quirky employees. Used to adapting to any job they work their poor old truck into the ground, carrying fast-setting cement and heavy machinery and in the event of accidents using wood and hammers to knock everything back into shape. And at the back, pulling the strings, is the ‘Old Man', David's father, tough in an old-school way and yet man enough to be won over by a kitten. A must buy for those in love with country ways.

David left school without any qualifications, except the prize from a school writing competition. He moved on to work with his father who was a nurseryman and landscape gardener. These stories from the early part of his working life tell of some of the characters his father employed, David's friends and their escapades.

Reading Davids book it took me back to when i was a young lad and the escapades that me and my friends got up to. I formed the impression that David was a country lover as i was in my youth and still am today. I wonder how many of us would own up to doing some of the things David tells in his book, some of them just friends larking about and some just a bit more dangerous. Ia am sure that many of us can recall doing such things in our youth. I believe that there are three more books in the series yet to be published; i for one await them being published so that i can enjoy more of David's writing.
