A Soul Burned is an extraordinary story. I began reading it on a 12 hour plane flight, on my iPhone Kindle, just to see what it was like, and I couldn't put it down. First time I've read a whole book on my iPhone!!
RJ Curtis builds his historical novel around a terrible event in WWII - the deliberate bombing to complete destruction of the German city of Dresden. He develops very authentic characters with empathy and compassion. His vivid descriptions take the reader into the depths of the horrors of war from both the perspective of the perpetrator and the victims. His research is extremely thorough, giving authenticity to his work. Through his characters, he also examines the awful futility and terrible waste that is war, and its consequences. But there is humour and redemption in it as well.
I found it an incredibly intense read, which at times, moved me to tears.
