Celebrate Books on World Book Day UK
“You cannot open a book without learning something” about 3000 years ago, a man named Confucius said that. He knew that even when books were in the shape that we know them to be. That is the kind of thinking that is celebrated each year on World Book Day.
World Book Day History
Though the UN sponsored World Book Day is celebrated in April, in the UK the day is observed on 1 March. The Day was first celebrated in 1995 in the United Kingdom.
Since then it has been celebrated every year on the same day and has developed its own traditions. For example, in some parts of the UK and Ireland children who attend school full-time are given a voucher to be spent on books. Book tokens are given to children so they can purchase £1 books from an especially selected list of titles.
A Day Just for Books
The central purpose of the day is to promote the importance of books and reading among children and adults alike.
Everyone dresses up as their favorite book character to celebrate the day.
Several other activities like extreme reading competitions, bookish characters ramp walk, book painting, book sharing, and book coloring etc. are also organized as part of the celebrations.
