Cookie Policy

Our use of cookies

When we provide services, we want to make them easy, useful and reliable. In the case of online services, one way to achieve this is to store small amounts of information on your device, for example, your computer or mobile phone. These include small files known as cookies. They cannot be used to identify you personally: they store simple pieces of information such as 'Javascript is disabled on this computer' or ‘this user wants to stay logged in’. We use these settings to display our site in the best possible way for your device and to improve services for you. There are two types of cookie you may encounter when using this site: First party cookies: these are our own cookies, set by our own services and used to optimise the performance of our site. Third party cookies: these are cookies found in other companies’ internet tools which we are using to enhance our site, both through providing functionality and gathering statistics to help us improve over time.

First party cookies

This site uses cookies in several places – we’ve listed each of them below with more details about why we use them and how long they will last. Cookies set by this website: has_js. This tells the website whether to load dynamic code (written in the Javascript programming language) or to use a fallback way of displaying the same information statically. It stores a single on/off setting that denotes whether or not the browser supports Javascript. The cookie is deleted when you leave the site. cookie-agreed This states whether the user has agreed to cookies being stored in their browser. It stores a single on-off setting for a maximum of three months. SESS[id] If you make an account on our site and sign in, a session data cookie will be stored in your browser. This is what the website uses to recognise that you are signed in as you move between different pages of the site. It will start with SESS and be followed by a long series of letters and numbers. Those letters and numbers are an encrypted link to your account settings on our server – they do not contain any information about your username themselves.

Third party cookies

As well as cookies we manage ourselves, some of the third-party content and services our website uses set cookies. We do not manage this information ourselves, so for definitive information about them, or to opt out, we advise visitors to contact the providers themselves. Google Analytics This service gathers statistical information about which pages on our site are most visited, how long they take to load, and which browsers most of the visitors to our site use. This data does not contain any information that could identify individual visitors; we use it to make as part of our decision-making process when we make technical or content-related changes to our site. For more information, see the Google Privacy policy, or install their Opt Out browser tool. Vimeo – We use the video streaming service Vimeo to host book trailers and other promotional materials on our site. As part of their service they set cookies to store viewer preferences and to track statistics about the use of their services. For more information see their cookie policy here. Social Links – We use share buttons from Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest on some of our pages; these services use cookies to record when users like or share a page. For more information click on the name of each site above to see their respective policies.
