1791. Three years after being transported to Botany Bay, Mary Broad, her two small children, husband and several desperate prisoners escape the cruel conditions of Australia's first convict colony. Stealing a boat in the middle of the night, they set off on their long voyage north - to freedom or death. After many adventures fighting the sea and warlike Aborigines, they succeed in crossing the shark-infested Timor Sea and land safely at Batavia (Indonesia), but there a cruel surprise awaits them.
