Antoni Sulek was born in Morpeth in 1951 to Polish parents, who came to England from a country torn apart by the Second World War. His work and his life was greatly influenced by his parents’ struggle to survive the labour camps of Siberia and their journey to freedom across Russia, Central Asia, Africa and the battle fields of Italy. He painted passionately and with an obsession which ultimately took over his life.

His work is extremely diverse; from portraiture and landscapes of the Polish and Northumberland countryside, to hard hitting expressionist paintings of Polish suffering and his own inner torment.

Antoni’s passion for painting and his eccentric lifestyle set him apart from the local community. His arrest and expulsion from Poland in the 1980’s and his self imposed exile from his family had a profound effect upon him.

This, his first biography, pulls together four years of research into his life and over 200 photographs of his work. Antoni died in 1988 just weeks before his 37th birthday.

Ingrid Taylor Ingrid Taylor
Ingrid Taylor was born in 1955 and lives with her husband Jon in Northumberland. She was a Detective Superintendent until she retired after 30 years service.

Professionally her work has involved investigating the lives of victims and suspects of homicide cases but she has now turned her hand to researching the life and work of Antoni Sulek and other artists.

Her interest in Sulek began when she was fascinated by some of his work on show at Chillingham Castle and having later met the artist’s father. She has traced and interviewed over 100 people who either knew Sulek or his work and has photographed over 2000 of his sketches and paintings before painstakingly piecing together his life story.
