Ann qualified as a medical doctor in 1962 and went into general practice but had to give this up after a few years when her eyesight deteriorated. She retrained as a psychodynamic psychotherapist and became an associate specialist in a regional centre for psychotherapy, also providing psychological support on the Haematology Unit at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham.
