The author is a retired medical practitioner with fifty years' experience. For twenty years he worked in rural and industrial practices in the North of England, followed by caring for students and staff at an Australian university. A past keen yachtsman and bushwalker he today enjoys carpentry and gardening, and is a member of a heritage railway preservation society.
