Britain's Best Independent Bookshops

Britain's Best Independent Bookshops

Take a glimpse at any British High Street – what do you see? Chances are there’s a branch of WHSmith or Waterstones nestled somewhere between a Starbucks or Costa.

The gentrification of our town centres is plain to see, and independent retailers are struggling to compete with almost 300 independent shops forced to close their doors each week. Devastatingly, it’s our book shops that are suffering the most.

All hope is not lost, however. Far from the sterile shelves of the corporate monoliths, many bookshops with character still remain. Here’s our pick of the best:

Mr B’s Reading Emporium 14-15 John Street, Bath

Boasting the accolade of Independent Bookshop of the Year 2011, Mr B’s Reading Emporium is a quirky bookshop located in the centre of Bath. We love the reading booths; where for just £3.50 you receive a comfy chair, headphones, coffee, biscuits and a closed door with a Do Not Disturb sign.

Topping and Company Booksellers of Ely 9 High Street, Ely

In the shadow of Ely Cathedral lies Topping and Company, a three storey haven for bibliophiles. Its shelves, piled high with works from every conceivable genre, invite you to rummage. The store also boasts a diverse events programme, regularly hosting the likes of Jodi Picoult and Sheila Hancock. Did we mention there’s free tea and coffee?

Rhyme and Reason 681 Ecclesall Rd, Sheffield

An Aladdin’s cave of children’s literature, Rhyme and Reason serves to instil a passion for reading in today’s kids.  Its two rooms are so crammed there is little room for customers or the enthusiastic staff who serve them, but that’s all part of this store’s charm.

The Guisborough Bookshop 4 Chaloner Street, Guisborough

Teeside’s last remaining independent bookshop, The Guisborough has a fiercely loyal customer base – and for good reason. If the huge selection of books on offer isn’t enough to make your bank account weep, their carefully curated selection of beautiful cards and gifts certainly will.
