Margaret Beames was born in 1935 at Cowley, a suburb of Oxford. She attended teacher training college at Saffron Walden and subsequently taught primary age children in both England and Kenya (her husband was a member of the Royal Air Force) for 17 years before emigrating to New Zealand in 1974. She started a very successful writing career there and had 41 books published, winning many awards and accolades. She also wrote many plays and pantomimes, some of which were performed on radio. This book, The Owen Girl was found among her papers after her untimely death from cancer in 2016.
