Sally Herdman
Robin Nicholson grew up near Blaydon, a suburb of Newcastle, and spent much of his childhood lost in a world of imagination. One of nine children, he was a natural storyteller from an early age. As an adult, he travelled the world working as a plasterer in the construction industry – always carrying a book with him, thanks to the encouragement of his former English teacher, Sally Herdman.
‘Sally Herdman’ is now the pen name under which Robin writes. The characters in Mama draw on the many people and experiences he encountered throughout his life, woven into a vivid portrait of Tyneside in the 1960s and early 1970s.
