The Autumn Years of a Colonial Boy
This is the last in a trilogy which began with Child of a Bygone Era, followed by The Growing Pains of a Colonial Boy and ending with this book, The Autumn Years of a Colonial Boy. They are all about my unique experiences as an advertising and marketing executive through the extraordinary decades from the 1940s to the present.
These were the decades that revolutionized the way we live today. The old social structure created by the Industrial Revolution had been dominated by manufacturing and production. These were blown away by the creation and development of the service industry, by computers, Wi-Fi, television, social media, advertising, credit cards and a desire for a now affordable good life for many. They were also the years that saw high inflation, recession, nuclear disasters, the Falklands’ war, more wars in the Middle East, vicious strikes, social unrest, and the effects of increased immigration. Despite these high and lows, I managed to enjoy an unusual life which I hope you will find not only informative but an enjoyable reading experience. I certainly hope so.

We were at our wit’s end and couldn’t figure out why my son was having problems with seemingly everything. Was it environmental, hereditary, induced by something else or all of these factors combined? He was falling through the cracks at school, the 20% they write off. The answer came to us when he was 14, at the end of 8th grade, in a documentary on TV. The problem was finally solved, BUT was it too late to help him?

A mind unravels. A system fails. A life refuses to be broken.
This powerful novel follows a young man whose world fractures without warning, plunging him into a battle with voices that will not let him rest. As he searches for meaning, he is drawn through the machinery of work, faith, and institutional care – places meant to heal but often wounding in their own ways.
From the claustrophobia of locked wards to the fragile hope of new beginnings, his journey is one of survival against forces both internal and imposed. Along the way, unexpected allies appear, love takes root in unlikely soil, and the long road back to himself begins.
Unflinching, humane, and darkly compelling, this is a story about madness, resilience, and the quiet, stubborn courage it takes to stay alive when the world – and your own mind – turn against you.
