Edward Shergold
This second novel by Melbourne-based author, Edward Shergold, continues the journey of the Moritz family’s settlement in their newly adopted country of Australia, first told in his debut novel, Jupiter.
This story follows the departure of Appius and Johanna, parents of the central character, Isaac, in the first novel, from the farm to the city. His father, Ezekiel, the patriarch of the family, has found work for Appius with his Romanian friend, Alexandru Balan.
In a move consistent with their ancient beliefs, Ezekiel and Grand Uncle Felix, the family oracle, have decided that Appius’ infant son, Ignatius, be given away to the care of a relation or family friend. The baby’s disabilities are the cause for such a determination.
Johanna is in the early stages of pregnancy with their second child, a boy named Isaiah, who is the subject of a battle for his soul, a story of reincarnation involving two assailants seeking return to life on earth.
