This fascinating tale follows Eloise Evergreen, a tree who sees different colours in her friends and wants to be like them. When seasons change, she wants her colour to turn from green she was born with to something extraordinary. Her remarkable journey includes friendship, self-discovery, and a gentle reminder that what makes us different is often what makes us stand out from the rest. Q&A With Andrea Hyatt
To cherish this season, we caught up with Andrea Hyatt for a special Q&A session. She shared how Eloise's story came to her mind, what makes her world resonate with us, and why this story serves as an inspiration for young readers and elders alike.
How did Eloise's strong aversion to the colour green come about, and do you think this personal dislike could resonate with readers, particularly young ones? Also, what role do dislikes or aversions play in storytelling, and can they serve as powerful tools for character growth?
With the beautiful fall season as the backdrop for the story, I needed a main character that did not change colours, like the other trees. So, sweet Eloise Evergreen was created. We are all like Eloise in some small way. Like her, we often want to change something about ourselves, and often, it is the thing that makes us unique. If, like Eloise, we can embrace those little things we dislike, we will be the best version of ourselves.
In Eloise Evergreen Isn't Keen on the Colour Green, the world around Eloise feels very vivid and tangible. How do you approach world-building in your writing, especially for younger audiences? And was this story more linear in development, or did it evolve expectedly?
I wanted to create a magical feel for this book. The farmhouse, barn, trees, owl, and family are familiar to children. However, the book takes on a magical feel when the trees exude human qualities, but only when the family isn’t present. Owen the Owl is the problem solver and devises a plan to help Eloise with her dilemma. The farmhouse and barn are highlighted at the beginning of the story because later in the story, these settings will be important to the plot. The charming family adds a twist to the story. The reader assumes someone resides in the farmhouse, but there isn’t any mention of them until they make their debut toward the conclusion of the story. Their role is small but important.
If you had to describe the book in three words or a short sentence, what would it be?
Who knew trees could have so much heart and personality and teach us a great deal about kindness, friendship, and self-acceptance.
If you could tell Eloise something, what would it be and why?
I would tell Eloise Evergreen to always stay true to herself because your real friends will love you no matter what.
