Book Description

During the Depression and World War II, conditions were very tough.

In the suburbs, it was quite common for two families to live in one house.

The barter system existed. If you had fruit, you swapped it for eggs or vice versa.

People helped each other out.

Nothing was wasted.

One example was butter wrapped in greaseproof paper. The paper was used to grease the inside of a cake tin and then used to light the fire in the stove.

Douglas Denny has lived in the Thirlmere and Warragamba areas all his life. He wrote this book when he was 89 years old. Douglas made numerous trips to the outback of New South Wales over the years and met some wonderful people from all walks of life. The experience allowed him to understand the vast difference between city and country living. It also made him appreciate the many friends who helped him in his early days.
