An Experience of War 1939/1945 is a memoir and poetry collection by the late P.R Ellis detailing his distinguished service as part of the Navy during the Second World War. Ellis’s recollections from these times are striking in their honesty and provide an illuminating insight into the era. The spectre of the conflict hangs over his poems; lost friends, the horror of war. A valuable entry in the canon of World War Two literature, An Experience of War is a unique and touching account of the war and the years of reflection that followed for Ellis.

Peter was born in Flaxton (north of York) the third of four children. He attended Maltby Grammar School and after a failed attempt to join the R.A.F. (sent home for being underage), he enlisted in the Royal Navy, was demobbed in 1946 and consequently retired from British Steel as head of the Works Study department in Parkgate.

He then filled his time with painting, fishing, mind puzzles and the writing of these memoirs.
