Book Description

The story begins in the early 1980s, at the Queen’s Club in London, where Mario, a young architect, meets Andrea, a journalist who is over from New York to report on Wimbledon.

The young couple go out to dinner and arrange to meet again in New York, where Mario has a scheduled business trip to view the real tennis courts of the New York Racket Club, as he is designing the Tennis and Rackets Museum in London.

Mario’s hobbies are photography and camera collecting, and he frequently visits camera fairs and camera auctions, purchasing classic cameras. On one occasion, he discovers undeveloped film in a Nikon camera, which he develops himself and is shocked to find out that the photos were taken in the early 1960s, depicting the shooting of a major international crime!

Shocked and realizing the seriousness of this, he doesn’t know where to turn and decides, as he has a trip planned to New York soon, to take them there and discuss the matter with Andrea, whom he feels he can trust.

In New York, Andrea becomes equally shocked when the matter is revealed and suggests that it will have to be handled with caution with people they can trust implicitly.

Further complications occur as they realize they are being followed and refrain from discussing the matter in public places, but only at her flat where, inevitably, tenderness ensues.

The story develops further by visiting the assassin’s widow’s house, which is in Dallas, Texas.

Nicholas Meletiou was born in Cyprus and studied Architecture in London where he formed a successful Practice shortly after qualifying. His hobby, Photography, expanded also into Camera Collecting, and part of his Collection is in two Museums. At Noesis in Salonica, and in Paphos Cyprus, where he offered 180 and 90 Cameras from his collection, respectively.

Nicholas is still a practicing Architect concentrating now on projects in his native country, where he has recently completed the New Cathedral of Cyprus.

  • Manos

Having excelled in photography, camera collecting and architecture, Nicholas Meletiou now reveals his hidden talent in prose writing. The title itself, ‘Background Shot’, is very intriguing as it is a pun: a photo shot and a discharge of weapon, both of which are miraculously interweaved in the story. Back cover and introduction: The writer was inspired by events in his own life. “a work of fiction”, “…...purely coincidental”: The mention of “early 1960s/ major international crime/Dallas/Texas/assassin’s widow’s house” will immediately be obvious to a knowledgeable reader what crime the writer is dealing with. This is also enhanced by the use of the initials of people involved instead of their full names. The knowledgeable reader will easily recognize them. Small numbered chapters: Very convenient and easy for the reader to follow the plot. The vivid narration and detailed descriptions of people, places and events as well as the clever use of long and short sentences and the historical present in the third person create a dynamic and dramatic effect making the development of the story even more engaging. In the reader’s mind it unfolds as if watching an adventure movie and every “sequence” causes an urge to see/read what comes next. The romantic relationship of the two protagonists adds interest and a sweet flavour to the narrative. In addition to the suspense of the main theme, the reader is intrigued to know what this romance will lead to. The novel is further enriched and ‘multicoloured’ by the imagery of and the references to tennis, cameras, art and riches and wealth. One could argue that the ending of the adventure calls for a sequel.
