Precious, the oldest of ten suffered all of her life. Her biggest fear of landing in a care home had now become true. All of her belongings were thrown in the rubbish, along with all of her memories. A stroke that was not treated, due to misconduct, had left her with slight dementia. The system was prepared to pay £900 a week for a care home she didn’t want to be in. She would have been better off in prison, at least you get parole in prison. The care home had thrown away the key. Her siblings and son had tried in vain to get her out, but her oldest daughter and granddaughters were insistent that she stay there, so they could get on with their dubious business.

Hello, My name is Glenys Maureen Kohlen, born Williams.

Born in Nottingham UK. I am one of ten children, born to Beatrice May and my father, Oswald. Each one of us has our own story to tell.

I came to Germany with WRAC in 1975 and married a German guy. I have one son, who I had at the age of 41. Actually, I am a late starter in everything I do or have done.

I have never written a manuscript, although often started but never finished.

I did write poems and won a prize when I was about eight years old at school. I found that very embarrassing when I had to go and collect my few sweets at the front of the class. The teacher said she found my poem beautiful, because it was about love, and she couldn’t understand that a person so young would think about romance at an early age.

This manuscript is very important to me because it is about my sister who is in a care home against her will. The names are all changed and although the main events are true, there are some fantasy chapters to make it less morbid.

This book is not written just to have written a book. It reflects the real world including real feelings about siblings' bondings; envy, competition, winner, loser, hate, love, care, destroy, rescue ... So that´s what´s going on in the world. The story of this book is about a sister who wanted to rescue her oldest sister who once did everything possible she could do to comfort her younger nine siblings and in her view got one day "prisoned" under the title protection. The author does not want to create a story with highs and deeps, she only does want to put a screaming help of an altruistic woman into letters, so the screaming for help can be heard at least after her death. The writing is pure from the bottom of her heart - you can read it in every line - with no camouflage but true feelings. The last thing you can sadly say ´Does it have to come to this it was so unnecessary!´.You can feel the anger, helplessness, disappointment, and powerless situation of Beth who tried to reach her best friend alias sister from that far distance. Well if people stop doing the possible, I guess it´s the worst as doing the best you can. Everyone will justify the things they do and the things they don´t do. That´s for sure! Nothing gets lost. If only everybody knew this.

Hello everyone, i write this review because i think if someone need a opinion before read or buy this book , this is one really amazing emotional and true story and beyond that a great message that people must listen and try to act before this thing happen to you or your loved ones if someone take your memory and put you in a hole or hell its same for me i think death is better than loosing yourself, although 5 stars to this book really a great story and great writer .

  • Luca

Ein gefühlvolles Buch über ein Thema, von dem man nicht oft liest. Das Englisch ist gut zu verstehen, so das die handlung gut in erinnerung bleibt. ich kann das Buch weiterempfehlen.

Beaten at birth is a book that doesn't shy away from not telling a heart-warming story. It is a book about family and what different meaning family can have. Either a safe space with people you can rely on, no matter what, or a group of people you are bound to and who have power over you - even if you don't like it.
Beaten at birth by Glenys Maureen Kohlen describes these two extremes and can either feel like a warm embrace or like a punch in the gut. Can definitely recommend it!

  • Dina

A very tragic story. It's well written. I read it and it brought me to tears. Not every book which is based on a true personal story can be so captivating as this one. It's so horrible to know that she has been imprisoned by the society and no one is standing by her. Even though her family is fighting for her to be free it seems like the health system is working against them.
