Gillian is an English woman living in rural Australia with her husband and cattle dog Jess. She loves writing and also enjoys gardening, cooking, horse-riding and singing amongst other interests. She has travelled widely in Australia and meeting people and hearing their stories.
She has three children and four grandchildren living in England, France and Australia. She loves to spend time with them as much as distances and time allow.
Quite simply I loved ‘Belonging’ by Gillian Wells. From the first page to the last page, there is an engaging story, well-drawn characters and a warm tone to the writing. ‘Belonging’ is primarily a coming of age story of a young English woman – Jen - who has been well brought up in an upper-middle class family. Jen and her family are distinctly ‘horsey’ and dearly love their animals and participating in fox hunting. But Jen’s comfortable life is thrown off course by a tragic event. She is plunged into a difficult period of self-doubt and turbulent emotions as she searches for love and belonging in England and Australia.
Gillian’s writing moves the action along at a cracking pace and I found reading ‘Belonging’ very involving and a lovely experience. Gillian has a wonderful talent for describing landscapes in the most vivid images, for example “the hounds moving as one, up the hill against the green crop …. like a large white handkerchief moving across the field.” (pages 16-17) The Australian outback is described as if “a huge paint brush with many colours had been let loose on the land.” (page 47)
In summary, ‘Belonging’ is a gripping story that keeps the reader turning its pages with eager anticipation. I highly recommend it!
A fast paced book that keeps you turning the pages throughout. A story of love and loss, families and feelings as the main character Jen tries to find where she, and her heart, belong in the world. Belonging has twists and turns throughout, I loved it. You get a real feeling for the characters involved. Make sure you have tissues at the ready as the story unfolds. I wouldn't hesitate in recommending this book.
A lovely read, kept me engaged throughout. A young woman's search for happiness and healing on a journey of opposite hemisphere and social background.
"Belonging" tells of displacement through lost love, mistaken loyalty and final reward.
A true countrywoman's pen exchanges England's gentle greeness for the raw colour and excitement of Australian country life with masterful word pictures.
