Returning to her family’s village in Scotland for the sombre anniversary of her brother Max’s passing, Martha, a dedicated primary school teacher from Camden, northwest London, braces herself for a flood of painful memories. Instead, she’s enveloped in the warmth and affection of her family and rekindles her bond with her best friend, Izzy.

However, her trip takes an unexpected turn when her father’s old Ford Escort breaks down en route to Inverness. To her dismay, the recovery truck that arrives is driven by Jackson, Max’s childhood best friend and the local mechanic. Martha has always held Jackson partly responsible for Max’s death, as he was with him on that fateful night.

Despite her best efforts to keep her distance, the undeniable chemistry between Martha and Jackson is palpable. She’s determined to resist any feelings for him, but when adversity strikes, Martha realizes that Jackson might just be the one person she can rely on.

A young woman’s journey back to her hometown unravels a chain of events that forever alters the course of her life in Potts’ compelling latest novel. Martha is living the dream in London — successful career, devoted boyfriend, and a new home on the horizon. But a trip back to her hometown in the Scottish Highlands brings back bittersweet memories of her late brother. Surprisingly, she finds solace in reconnecting with her family and childhood friend Izzy. However, fate intervenes when her car breaks down on a lonely road and Jackson, her brother’s best friend and local mechanic, comes to the rescue. Martha has always harbored resentment towards Jackson for her brother’s death, but as they spend more time together, their undeniable chemistry starts to grow. Caught between her loyalty to the man in her life and the growing bond with Jackson, Martha must navigate through unexpected challenges and find where her heart truly lies. This is mostly a lighthearted read, despite Martha’s struggle with her grief and her resentment toward Jackson. However, Potts does not shy away from the darker facets of human experience. The novel touches upon misogyny and an attempted rape, subjects that are, unfortunately, part of the fabric of many women’s lives. By incorporating these themes, she lends a raw authenticity to her characters’ world, acknowledging the harsh realities that coexist with moments of joy and resilience. Potts handles these themes with a sensitivity that does not detract from the overall light-hearted tone of the book. Instead, they add layers of depth to the narrative, creating a richer, more compelling story. The Mackenzie family’s journey through grief after Max’s death symbolizes the universal struggle to make sense of loss and to integrate it into the fabric of one’s life. Martha, as a character, embodies this journey towards emotional resolution. Though she might appear to be a “quiet presence,” her internal struggle, resilience, and eventual growth resonate loudly with readers, who find themselves rooting for her. The dynamics of her relationship with Jackson, marked by a sincere and down-to-earth connection, add a tantalizing layer of romantic tension to the narrative. The pacing is leisurely and smooth, the setting deeply atmospheric, and the plot expertly crafted. Throughout, Potts deftly intertwines themes of family, friendship, love, passion, grief, trauma, regret, and redemption in the affecting narrative. A poignant slice-of-life romance about finding love and belongingness.
