Every longstanding football fan should have this book - "By The Way" written by Bob Cass on their Christmas wish list this year!!
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this fabulous autobiography by one of the best known sports journalists around and a terrific and well respected man by all accounts too.
Although Bob sadly died in 2016 he has left all of his favourite and brilliant memories in this fabulously entertaining book that I highly recommend.
With Bob being good friends with Sir Alex Ferguson it seems only fitting that he has written the foreword to the book, acknowledging his respect for Bob and confirming the honesty and integrity in which he carried out his work.
There's a story for every football fan here, in particular I found the tales about Sunderland AFC highly interesting being a born and bred Sunderland fan myself and actually learnt quite a lot regarding our transfers and manager appointments. The Hillsborough disaster chapter was very saddening and evoked a lot of obvious emotion from Bob that continued on through every anniversary. So many big names are also mentioned - Brian Clough, Cantana, Beckham, Gazza along with many more and all of the stories tend to have en element of humour to them. From local teams where Bob was born to national and even the international squad are included and with hilarious anecdotes this is a great read. There's also some interesting photos in the middle of the book to add to the narrative.
This book is truthful, honest, sincere, funny and packed with insight into the world of professional sport and journalism.
If you have a friend/family member who are fans of the beautiful game and you're struggling to find a gift for this Christmas, buy this - it's perfect!!
"You've read his stories....now read the story BEHIND the stories."

This is a book about sports, mostly soccer, and the press.
Let me start by saying, I know very little about soccer. So most of the book was not anything I could relate too. I also am not familiar with most of people discussed.
The prologue which was about the birth of Bob Cass was very interesting but after that there were very few sections dealing with his life that weren't all sports. Chapter 24 about his school days was one that I enjoyed and wished that there were more of these stories.
The chapter I found most enjoyable was 18. Chapters 17 and 18 were about golf and I am familiar with that sport.
If you are a soccer fan, I am sure you will find this book much more interesting than I did.
