James Clare's book, Compelled by Desire is a book with heart, a courageous one. It is a chronicle of the ravages, physical, emotional, social and spiritual, of the disease of addiction, alcohol, sex and materialism. The pain and suffering is so authentic, at times it is difficult to read about. But a new redemptive story emerges, one with hope, wisdom and meaning.
It is a read that inspires understanding and compassion. Incidentally, the reader can experience a world widely traveled, including mountain adventures and an education in the world of finance. While serious and reflective, there are laugh out loud moments, lyrical descriptions of scenery and even poetry.

This marvellously candid and vivid story captured my attention, emotions and heart. The author's endless multifarious ambitions and adventures helped validate the many paths I have taken (and not taken). The quest for higher self slowly, at times painfully, unfolds from the shadows of impropriety into the awakening light of transformation. What comes through at the end is the author's humbled spirit--grounded, free, on a mindful path with heart.
