Animals captivate children not because they mimic human abilities, but because they possess extraordinary adaptations that seem almost beyond human reach.

With whimsy, inventive language, and playful rhyme, Doubly Amazing celebrates the remarkable talents of quadrupeds, winged creatures, and aquatic wonders. From the familiar elephant to the exotic axolotl, each animal appears twice, paired with a different counterpart to highlight their unique skills in a fun, lighthearted competition of one-upmanship.

As young readers discover these fascinating abilities, they may begin to wonder: if animals are so gifted, where do humans stand? The answer might surprise them.

A lover of words and a well-turned phrase, Peg Marrin pursued undergraduate work in English and graduate work in comparative literature. She is the mother of six, a former teacher and curriculum writer who spent her career advancing the cause of literacy, particularly for those who struggle to learn to read. Her last position was vice president of reading development at Voyager Expanded Learning in Dallas, Texas. Now retired, she writes while looking out across the woods in Northern Minnesota or at a cityscape in Texas.

Sarah Rice is an artist living in Minnesota. A lifelong love of wildlife, wilderness, and all the bright and beautiful colours of nature have inspired the illustrations you find in this book.

Peg and Sarah’s first collaboration, Make Your Mark, was published in 2021 by Austin Macauley Publishers. This book for children was reviewed by elementary teachers as well as PhDs in education. One educator called it an “onion book, which can be interpreted and discussed at many levels of depth.” Another called it “a lovely story with a surprise literacy ending,” adding “The inclusion of beautiful descriptive language is matched by the beautiful illustrations.” Another called it a “little gem of a children’s book” which offers kids a “head start into the joy of reading.”
