Book Description

I was 8 years old when I first met Federico Fellini on the set of 8½, where my mother, Caterina Boratto, had the role of the mysterious lady. In 1975, when I gave him my thesis on 8½ for my BA degree, he said after reading it, “Paolino, you’ve x-rayed my soul.” From then on, I spent a lot of time with him, and slowly I became keenly aware that I was in the company of a genius: someone who could “see things” before anyone else. With the passage of time, I was troubled that I could lose the emotion behind such encounters, for even the echo of a mother’s voice can fade away over time and become inaudible; I did not want to risk that.

Federico Fellini: The Trail of a Genius is not a psychological treatise, nor a cinematic discourse, nor a display of memories. It is a multi-coloured mix of these about an artist who lived to create and who conquered the world with the magic of his films.

Paolo Ceratto, born in Turin, Italy, is the son of Caterina Boratto, one of Federico Fellini’s favorite actresses and a very close friend. After completing his studies in the US, he worked for 20th Century Fox, the United Nations, and Turin’s National Cinema Museum. He has authored two books in Italian and has been contributing articles for various newspapers and magazines, both national and international, about inter alia, his favorite soccer team, Juventus, and his longtime passion: watches.
