Book Description

From Handbags to Hand Grenades is the riveting true story of Kathryn West, a courageous front-line officer in London’s Metropolitan Police force. From 1990 to 2020, she dedicated her life to serving and protecting the people of Britain during some of the most historical and life-altering events of our time.

This gripping memoir follows her career, intertwining significant news stories that shook the nation. To preserve anonymity, some names and places have been changed, but the events surrounding them remain unaltered. Readers will be transported to the heart of the action, from the harrowing Tavistock Square bombing and the attacks on Westminster Bridge to the tragic fire at Grenfell Tower. West’s narrative balances true grit with humorous anecdotes, including tales of politicians’ lost handbags, visits to the White House, and dancing at the vibrant Notting Hill Carnival.

Through her eyes, readers will gain unprecedented insight into the inner workings of the Metropolitan Police. From the first page, West’s authentic voice will draw you in, revealing the sadness and happiness, lies and deceit that police officers must navigate daily. Prepare to laugh, cry, and have your eyes opened wide as you witness the reality of life behind the thin blue line.

Kathryn West started her professional career within the corridors of power at Parliament, where she worked for several MPs. After reading a chance advert in a newspaper, she decided to apply for a graduate scheme being run by the Metropolitan Police Force. Successful in her application, she spent the next thirty years as an officer dealing with both the best and worst of humanity across London. As a keen cold-water swimmer and avid Tour de France fan, Kathryn now splits her time between her beach apartment in Cornwall and a small dwelling on the continent, close to the annual route undertaken by the French cycle race.

This looked like an unusual book so thought I'd give it a go. It follows 30 years of tales from a frontline police officer in London so as you'd expect there are lots of funny incidents. Protagonist Kathryn comes across as a rough diamond - I think she'd do anything to protect you but you wouldn't want to get on her bad side :) Quite a few laugh-out-loud moments and some sad ones too which I guess goes with the policing job, also lots of behind-the-scenes references to events most of us will recall from the news over the last 10 years. Quite large font which is nice, so I might get one as a gift for Mum. All in all a great read.

As someone who is studying a police riding manual at the same time as reading this book I appreciate the juxtaposition of Kathryn West the person vs the professional, unerring public servant. There is definitely some erring in the book which will make you laugh and cry but never at the expense of her reputation as a front line officer / this is a really real read if that makes sense. Great bed time or holiday read.
