Gijima is a newly-hatched baby tortoise. One day, he decides he would like to leave the safety of the tortoise sanctuary, where he lives with his mother and siblings, and take a trip to see the world. He soon discovers that the life of a tortoise has many dangers. He must learn new lessons to avoid being harmed and captured. In the end, he makes a friend and they travel together helping other animals.

Lorna Lamberti is an administrative assistant born in Gwelo, Zimbabwe (then Rhodesia) who moved with her family to South Africa at the age of seven. Growing up with her two sisters on a farm, she developed her love of animals. Attending school in Bryanston, Lorna later studied accounting and business administration. Now happily married and a mother, working together with her husband of 25 years in his engineering company, she recently studied sales and draughting. Lorna has a love of children and her greatest desire is to encourage children to read and write their own stories to promote understanding and kindness for the preservation of all living creatures.

Gijima is a lovable character whose journey teaches us about the dangers faced by leopard tortoises both in the wild and in human spaces, as well as important life lessons about kindness, forgiveness and self-belief. The book is divided into three parts. The story of the young tortoise’s adventures is brightly illustrated and the language level will appeal to confident young readers. It introduces us to African wildlife and deals sensitively with socio-environmental challenges. Gijima’s calmness and positivity make him a wonderful role model for dealing with new and perilous situations and help lead him to a happy ending. The activities section will keep younger children engaged. The ‘Did you know?’ section contains interesting facts accompanied by gorgeous photographs, taken by the author herself, of leopard tortoises in their natural habitat.

Excellent!! This book is very original and refreshing giving so many real facts and details teaching children about nature and tortoises. I learned a lot as an adult. And still there is an easy to understand story line with real life lessons about humanity, care and compannionship. If I could give the book 10 out of 5 I would.
