Book Description

In a world seemingly characterized by ethical subjectivism, relativity, and ambiguity, it is crucial that we equip our children with the necessary tools to navigate life intelligently within a firmly built framework of ethical and moral values. Before setting them free, we must ensure they possess the sharp intellectual skills required to make intelligent ethical decisions. Such a framework is constructed through parental example and decision-making skills training and practice. Children as young as Kindergarten through Sixth Grade are smarter and more absorbent than you may think. They can learn through both teacher and parental example and thinking skills training. This roadmap serves as a guide for teachers and parents alike, helping them navigate the maze called early childhood education and parenthood, ultimately providing their children with the foundation they need to make sound ethical choices in an increasingly complex world.

As a clinical psychologist, Dr McDill has spent his life at the intersection of human behavior and ethics. Alongside his clinical practice, which extends to both correctional and non-correctional settings, he has taught psychology and ethics at various colleges and universities in the Southern California region. His teaching spans undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral levels. Outside his professional life, he enjoys a happy marriage with three children and five grandchildren.

The definitive book on instilling ethical excellence.

  • Dr. Jackie Kegley

I am a firm believer in teaching by example so I would say that instilling ethical excellence in children is best done by role modeling. This would mean several things: (1) Making ethical behavior the center of family relationships, i.e. letting children and the family see this as a guiding value in family and other relationships. This can be done via role modeling, family discussions, reinforcement of behavior, providing opportunities to see ethical role modeling and to engage in family discussions about this role modeling. This would include open discussions about examples where ethical excellence is not the case. (2) Offering various opportunities to illustrate what ethical behavior means either personally or through examples of others. Above all, one should encourage open discussion and reflection on the meaning of various kinds of behavior and how such fails to be ethical or succeeds in doing so. One should always present ethical excellence as a work in progress, something to aways be reflected on and improved.
