Horses and ponies are the most majestic, intuitive and beautiful animals. They will become trusted companions and the best of friends when cared for and loved. Their strength and power will always be more than ours, and yet, if we treat them well, and ride with compassion, they can become putty in our hands.

Over the years, I have found that horses and ponies want to please, and they want to have fun. They have their fears, as we all do, and sometimes they catch us off guard when they are frightened by something. As their rider, we need to be vigilant, be constantly aware of our riding position and be observant of our animal’s behaviour.

Through this story, you will witness a very special bond develop between Matt and Pandora. Some of the tips and hints included may help you with your own experiences. Perhaps you are looking to buy a horse or a pony for your child and may enjoy hearing about our experiences. Or maybe you will simply enjoy witnessing this relationship develop between a young boy and his young pony.

Cathy was brought up in Cornwall from the age of 10 on the family farm by her mum and dad, with her two sisters. She has always enjoyed the outdoor life and the diversity that Cornwall offers. Her work has revolved around children, young people and families within Health, Education, Children’s Services and the Voluntary Services. She lectured, for many years, on Child Care and Education before taking up a role within Learning and Development for Cornwall Council. Having retired, Cathy is now able to spend more time with her family and grandchildren, enjoying some of the activities that she enjoyed as a child and sharing some of those special places and adventures described in White Horses and Sunbeams.

  • A horserider

This delightful little book succeeds on two levels.
It is the story of a special summer enjoyed by a grandmother with her grandson who shares a passion for horses.
It captures all the excitement of preparing for the arrival of a longed-for first pony. Not for Matt a wise schoolmaster, but a green youngster like him.
Throughout the narrative we see them grow together. Matt shows great pluck and determination as he embraces this challenge with enthusiasm.
Secondly, it offers advice and tips seamlessly woven in on every page, for the new owner or an aide memoir for anyone taking up the reins for a second time.
It reflects the balance that can be achieved between responsibility, risk-taking and fun. The ideal gift for a family about to embark on this adventure.
