This book contains a collection of stories written by a group of friends who met during school and university days. Rarely celebrated, these short stories are about their mothers. While these women were from different backgrounds and some were born, or lived their early lives, in different countries, they shared some things in common. They were British by either birth or ancestry. They were middle class and they were young mothers during the latter part of World War 2, or shortly thereafter. They lived in Canberra during the ’50s, ’60s and ’70s – longer in some cases – and contributed to the social life of the growing city in a variety of ways.

On completion of her initial studies at the Australian National University, Robbie worked as a teacher, a biochemist, a political activist and a feminist activist in Australia and the United Kingdom culminating in her election as a member of the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) Legislative Assembly. Thirty years working in the non-government sector and the New South Wales (NSW), Australian Capital Territory (ACT) and Australian governments followed. In 2004 she joined Regional Assistance Mission to Solomon Islands (RAMSI) as an advisor to the Solomon Islands’ Prime Minister and Head of the Cabinet Office, and in 2008, she worked as an advisor to the national police (PNTL) in Dili, Timor-Leste. Robbie now lives in Canberra with her husband and works in the public sector. She has two adult children and four grandchildren.

A fascinating and informative read from cover to cover, "Our Mothers" is a unique celebration of an impressive diversity of women who became mothers. A welcome and unusual addition to community library collections, it also should be noted for personal reading lists that "Our Mothers" is available in a digital book format (Kindle, $4.50).
