Book Description

We all run a race in life every day, but how do we prepare for it? This pure and heart-warming book uses running as a metaphor for the journey of preparation, action, and learning from life’s activities.

Rachel draws from her years of experience as a runner to share valuable advice and insights, helping children understand what to expect on a school race day. More importantly, she encourages young readers to see that ‘running’ their race – whether on the track or in life – is more approachable than they might think.

Rachel is a previous national-level cross country runner with a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology. While observing her two young children, she was reminded of the mental and physical preparation required for a race, and that the journey provides the learning, not the destination. This distilled learning can equally apply to other life pursuits.

Run Your Own Race by Rachel Ferris is a standout children’s book filled with practical wisdom and thoughtful insights into race preparation, that are easy for young readers to understand and apply. The author has done a brilliant job of helping kids to know exactly what to expect on the day of a race as well as breaking down the components of race preparation-physical readiness, mental focus, pacing, and emotional resilience. Run Your Own Race explores themes like perseverance, self-belief, goal setting, and the importance of ‘just doing you’, even when others are running at a different pace. This book gives children permission to feel nervous, to struggle, and to keep going anyway. These are critical messages in today’s world, where kids are often overwhelmed by pressure to perform. I wholeheartedly recommend Run Your Own Race to those looking for a story that inspires children to trust themselves, prepare thoughtfully, and run their own race—in sport, and in life.
