Scarlet Sealwax is a collection of twenty-eight introspective poems focusing on the essence of human relationships. In fact, it is the concept of idealized love that permeates this collection. Under the dystopian circumstances that we are currently experiencing as a species, idealized love, no matter how utopian, is looked upon as an emotional condition resulting from self-awareness, self-respect, honesty and unconditional (yet fully conscious) devotion to one's beloved, with whom one may happen to be lucky enough to experience a wholesome connection at all levels: spiritual, emotional and physical.

To the mind of the poetess, it is only through the experience of whole-hearted love and devotion that the transfiguration of the self, the miraculous rebirth of one's soul and, hence, fulfilment and bliss, are attainable. What also emerges is that self-actualization, in all respects, will only be possible if one is prepared to shake free from intentionally fabricated misconceptions about what is right and what is wrong. It is to break, to shatter, I dare say, the “rusty moulds” of what has been falsely established as “the norm”. This is actually just a set of poisonous and mutilating stereotypes, maiming people’s thoughts, deeds, dreams, potential and their whole lives.

Iona Lockhart was born in Athens, Greece. She studied English Literature at the University of Athens, and piano performance at the National Conservatory of Athens. She holds an MA in TESOL (Teaching English to Students of Other Languages). She has been teaching English in secondary education since 1999, and has worked as a teacher educator too. She has been writing poetry – principally in English but also in her own native language – since 2011. Scarlet Sealwax is her first collection to be published. She has also been writing stories drawing on symbols and ideational patterns from Greek and world mythology and folklore. She is currently working on three new works.

Scarlet Sealwax is one of the most intimate and expressive contemporary poetry collections I've read in quite a while!
The motif of Love as this higher power that gives purpose and fuels one's existence is dominant throughout the poems, but definitely not the only focus. I loved the fact that this was also a journey of self-reflection, self-discovery and growth. The poetess skillfully depicts moments of internal conflict and pain both inevitable in our life, but also offers hope for spiritual rebirth and paints a beautiful picture of the very personal, never-ending quest for one's own 'utopia'.
The eloquence of speech and strength of imagery both contribute to the gripping quality of this collection. Vivid scenes of the natural world masterfully interact and blend in with the dystopian.
Scarlet Sealwax is a pure roller coaster of emotions as well as some honest soul-searching!
It's poetry that speaks to everyone.
