Penelope Alice is a software engineer. Raised in Buckinghamshire, she spends many happy hours walking in the countryside and visiting the local attractions.
From a young age, Penelope has wanted to be a writer. She usually feels most relaxed making up stories and new worlds.
Penelope’s passions include playing cello in her local orchestra, watching anime and drinking far too much tea.
This book is obviously aimed at the young adult market. It has action, drama, great characters including a sassy female lead and even a touch of romance! It is well written with great description of its mystical, magical setting and characters. I particularly liked the different family dynamics, both good and bad. A book that draws you in and leaves the story line open for a sequel.
I really enjoyed this book. It's a great mix of deep characters, strong plot and intelligent themes. The main character wins you over in the opening pages and you're immediately hooked on how her adventure will unfold. I try to keep reviews generic, so as to avoid accidentally spoiling any twists and turns, but I will sum up by saying I highly recommend this book. If you're looking for something from a new author, give this a try.
A delightful book. I've loved reading this book. So much fun. Can't wait to see what this author creates next.
In Luna Nox’s village, men and women have very set roles in their society. Each person and each family have their place and every rule must be obeyed under their Leader. If the laws are broken they are punished with exile which leads to a swift death. However, Luna is an outcast with no friends as she does not behave as a girl should. She is different. She wishes to be a Hunter. When monsters emerge and take one of their own, terror spirals through the village causing chaos and allowing Luna a chance to finally prove to the Leader and the rest of the village that the outcast can fight and be a Hunter despite being female. She is a warrior, and the monsters are coming. All must fight if they are to survive. Wow what a book. I absolutely loved it. The beginning confused me a little as it’s basically told as Luna showing her memories to a crowd in a cave. Took a little getting used to but as it flicked back and forth it was easier to understand what was happening. Penelope Alice is an author I’d not heard of but I really enjoyed this book. Reading about a strong FMC who challenged the way of her world and having to work damn hard for what she wants, you find yourself cheering Luna on the whole time. Because don’t most of us women have to work damn hard to prove ourselves?? The characters are all really interesting and you see some really growth in the main cast of characters which is good to see. I can’t believe the cliffhanger though and will be waiting impatiently for a sequel to see what happens next.
This is an easy read and entertaining, borrowed my daughters copy of the book but she took it back so I now have the kindle edition to finish it! Recommend giving Soul Fire by a new author a try, I took the chance and I am glad I did.
I’d give more stars if I could
I really enjoyed this, and my only complaint is that there is surely more story to follow and Book 2 isn't available yet! I especially loved her description of adolescent boys, I thought it was spot on. And I loved the way Luna thinks for herself, and her courage. This is a really good story that sweeps you away.
Set in a fantasy world of sprites, this novel tells a very human coming of age story, detailing the journey of someone who never really fitted in finding their place in society. The twists and turns of the adventure and the gradual revealing of this strange world kept me gripped until the very last page. Fantastic debut from Penelope Alice. Can't wait for the sequel and hopefully the film!
