Ambassador Nils-Johan Jørgensen was born and went to school in North Norway. He attended military academy and the Universities of Oslo, Heidelberg, Exeter and Oxford (Norway Scholar at Wadham). He was research fellow at the Norwegian Institute of International Affairs. As a career diplomat he served in Bruxelles, Copenhagen, Harare, Tokyo, Bonn and Dar es Salaam.
He received the St Olav's Order in 1997. He was married to Jill who died in 2005. They have two daughters and three grandchildren.
