Scruffy is an adventurous dog who wants to explore the world but finds himself a little bit lonely and a little bit confused…until he has a go.

Speak Scruffy! Have a Go! is a French language-learning bilingual picture storybook, written for children of approximately 3–8 years of age. It introduces the concept of travel and languages. It is a first step in developing young children’s ability to communicate with French speakers, aided with pronunciation hints such as for ‘Thank you’ there is ‘Merci’ (mair-see). Families can communicate essential language with confidence when they travel. In addition to the enjoyment of learning a language, parents and teachers can foster an appreciation and respect for other cultures.

This is an entertaining, uplifting, interactive story about a dog’s journey, not just a travelling journey, but a journey which involves uncertainty, kindness, understanding the world better, perseverance, building confidence, celebrating difference and gaining a new language skill. It’s a fun, shared experience to be read over and over again.

Learning a language provides many benefits such as improving cognitive function. Languages are a lifelong skill that can be used in business and pleasure, enabling communication, discovery and a wider cultural understanding.

Katy Unsworth enjoyed a career in human resources before she retrained and became a pre-school teacher.

Katy has always enjoyed travelling and has a degree in French and sociology. Many children are introduced to the experience and concept of travel when they are very young. Katy passionately believes in the importance of building confidence in language learning from an early age and in fostering an appreciation and respect for other cultures.

Katy lives in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, with her husband, two children and a dog called Scruffy.

Such a lovely book with cute illustrations and an uplifting storyline. Great way to get kids interested in other languages from a young age. Brilliant addition to any home book shelf or school class book corner.

This is an enchanting story with attractive illustrations which I am sure will catch the imagination of my grandchildren! It's a really fun way to introduce French at an early age; I think it can work on many levels for the very young through to independent learners in school. The story will appeal to pre-schoolers and will engage older children to try out the new vocabulary. Highly recommended!

This is a great book. It is an excellent start for both young children and those into Years 3/4 who are beginning their curriculum journey into learning French. For younger children the pictures are engaging and the explanations on how to pronounce the words is fantastic. For older children, although they may know some of the words, the message of ‘striving’ to ‘have a go’ at something outside your normal comfort zone is a thread throughout. It shows that challenging yourself is a value you should foster. Well done to Katy (and Scruffy!) for such a super book- I look forward to the next one, as do my class!

Such a lovely book! Bought for my 7-year-old daughter and she really enjoyed it. There is help with the correct pronunciation of the French words which is great for children (and adults!) to build up their confidence. It is a lovely story about Scruffy and his helpful friend Whiskers the cat, with beautiful illustrations. Would highly recommend!

My year 3 class are just beginning to learn French and thoroughly enjoyed this delightful picture book which encourages children to develop their French conversational skills. A really clever concept.

Great book for encouraging young children to feel confident in having a go at speaking French. Useful, basic phrases for holidays. This book is really building confidence for my son. Very cute, well written & beautifully illustrated. Would highly recommend!

My love affair with France started when I was very young and although I was very keen to learn the language translating what we learnt in the classroom setting to real-life was tricky. We now look forward to younger members of the family coming out to visit us in the South or France so we will definitely have a copy of 'Speak Scruffy' on the shelf to help them learn french the easy fun way.

A beautifully, well - written book in its own right, but with the added bonus of being really useful in introducing and helping children to learn a new language. It's gorgeous illustrations and adventurous story, with Scruffy the dog as the star, make it super fun to read. The kindness of his friends in encouraging him to have a go is a lesson in itself and will build children's confidence to try it too. I love the "Pronunciation Help" sections which make it so easy to speak the language. I highly recommend this book and can't wait to see more adventures with Scruffy!
