A little girl named Helen has a number of cuddly toys, and among them is an owl called Dowl. However, Dowl has a life of his own, and when he goes out for a walk with his friends, he has unexpected adventures.

Roger Adcock was a teacher who became the first Head of Comberton Village College, Cambridge; Head of Wells Blue School, Somerset; and Principal of St Matthias College of Education, Bristol. After retirement, he trained school governors in Devon and formed the Devon Association of Governors. There, he and his wife, Audrey, had a smallholding and became founding members of the Devon Association of Smallholders He has two daughters and four grandchildren and lives in his native Hampshire.
