The Cruise Vacation takes readers on a wild ride through the highs and lows of addiction, as told through the unfiltered lens of a former nurse turned drug addict. From the hectic pace of a UK hospital to the dizzying rush of snorting, injecting and smoking any narcotic he could get his hands on, the protagonist’s story is a cautionary tale of excess and adventure. As he spirals out of control, he exchanges his professional life for a world of self-anesthetisation, casual sex and multiple attempts to kick the habit. Through community rehabilitations, untold pain, regrets, and a horrific example of failure, the protagonist’s childhood sweetheart remains by his side, helping him cling to life and recognize his own mortality. This personal journal takes readers through the heart-wrenching journey of addiction, offering a stark reminder of the destructive power of drugs and the importance of love, family, and community in the face of overwhelming temptation.

Josh grew up in Derbyshire, the United Kingdom, with his mother, father and younger sister. He lived a lavish life, partying and studying in tandem. He is an alumnus of the University of Nottingham, where he would move to with his childhood sweetheart, Jenny. He worked as a registered nurse full-time for five years. During this period of affluence, he began using opioids, which spiralled into an addiction to heroin, benzodiazepines and cocaine. Unable to maintain his addiction and nursing, he lost his dream job and headed for destruction. At 27, he recovered from addiction and graduated as a barber. He kept journals throughout; this is his journey from professional to addict and survivor. He now resides with his much-loved fiancée Jenny and Cat Diekin, his soulmates scars and all.

This book is a perfectly written, unfiltered yet brutal account of addiction giving readers a behind the scenes, personal story of nurse turned drug addict Josh. I could not put the book down. It is a gripping, dark, and a prime example that addiction can affect anyone. The author provides a vivid illustration to readers of the intense highs and devastating lows of drug use, with whirlwinds of emotion throughout his journey of grit, desire, and determination. I would highly recommend this book. An absolute must read for anyone living with or supporting someone with addiction, or for those working within the field of substance misuse.
