Book Description
Stephen became a lawyer quite by chance. He rescued a French damsel in distress, who forever after wanted to marry him, and through her got a job as a messenger with a firm of lawyers in Paris. He liked the law and, in due course, qualified as a French avocat. He was put in charge of a subsidiary law firm in Reims; this prospered, but Stephen became involved with a family of Corsicans, of doubtful reputation. He married the daughter of one of them, and life was kind to him until he was accused of the murder of the girl with which the whole story started.
He practised French law, but he remained very English and even implicated his father in some of his less than legal operations.
