Phat lives on an isolated farm with poor facilities. He is often surrounded by sporty pupils who seem to laugh and have fun. So, he enters a “keepie uppie” competition and deals with the many problems he encounters in the hope that he can also be a happy schoolboy. Hopefully this story will inspire others to overcome life problems and help those who live in some sort of isolation, like loneliness, to achieve a better and more fulfilling life by working hard to achieve this goal.

Martin Mitchell went to school and initially lived in Halifax, attending Wainstalls Primary and Halifax Technical High School and then to Alsager Teacher Training College to train as a PE teacher. He then got married and taught in Bradford as a PE teacher for twenty-eight years and then a supply teacher for another ten years. He has always been a capable all-round sportsman, participating in many sports but mainly football and tennis. Now at seventy-three years of age, his hobbies are walking and playing the drums.

A thoroughly enjoyable read. I read this with my 6 year old son and he loved the story and wanted to know more about Phat even when the story finished. We really liked the illustrations and my son loved the pictures on the football field. It’s a feel good motivating story and it should help enforce the message that everyone should be kind to each other. It was so nice to see the sports teacher supporting and encouraging phat to join the football team. This is a definite firm favourite book in our house. Thank you!
