Natalie McDermid grew up in Edinburgh, Scotland, as part of a large family. Throughout her childhood, she was mainly interested in sports. However, after getting married to her wife and starting the process to have a family of her own, she felt that there were not a lot of children’s books that reflected how diverse the world we live in is. Natalie decided to write a short children’s story where the main character was in a same-sex relationship so that her child could see its mother represented in a fairy tale.
My two daughters absolutely loved this book, they sat enthralled for the full story. The beautiful pictures and magical words were just perfect, a wonderful addition to our bookshelf. Straight after finishing my eldest told me she loved it and asked for me to read it again, which I happily did.
What a lovely book to teach kids inclusivity, acceptance and how love comes in all different ways! Love is love! My kids are 3 and 7 and it’s our new favourite.
I hope we hear more about Princess Olivia and Sofia’s life together.
