The Wheelchair is the story of Teresa McKenna, who was tragically diagnosed with poliomyelitis at the age of four, leaving her paralysed. This book details her life in full, through many ups and downs, multiple health conditions, family life and personal tragedies.

Through the words of the author, this autobiography gives the reader an inspirational look at what it takes to tackle any challenge and overcome difficulties that come along in life.

Teresa McKenna was born in Ardwick, a poorer area of Greater Manchester, England, in 1932. Living a happy and healthy childhood until tragedy stuck in 1936 when Teresa was diagnosed with Infantile Paralysis or what we know now to be Polio Myelitis which led to a two and a half year stay in hospital.


Throughout Teresa’s life, she has overcome many medical adversities which has never allowed to hold her back. Teresa went on to marry the love of her life, Arthur, at twenty years old; a marriage that lasted almost fifty years whilst raising four children along the way.
