ENTWINED LIVES

A SECRET THAT RIPS THEM APART

TWINS ON A TURBULENT VOYAGE OF DISCOVERY

A sugar plantation, a waterlily pond, and a decades-old deception are the backdrop for When Lily Ponds Ripple. It is a forceful narrative about the West Indian twins, Florence and Charlotte Montague. Their rivalry for the same man underscores just how close loyalty and betrayal are.

The revelation of a family secret takes the Barbadian sisters from their sheltered island to London and Germany. In Frankfurt, Florence becomes a notable author, while Charlie’s career leads her from the London stage to Hollywood. Despite their geographical separation, the sisters cannot escape one another, far less their shared history. To face the future, they must confront the past together.

Born in Trinidad, Anne-Marie Fitzwilliam grew up in Barbados. At the age of twenty-one, she emigrated to Germany where she read English and German at the Wolfgang Goethe University. She holds degrees in both subjects. The author lives in Frankfurt. This is her first novel.

After a few chapters of When Lily Ponds Ripple, I closed my eyes and saw the mango tree in the garden at Royal Palms. I even smelt the overripe fruit near the lily pond. The colourful prose transported me to Florence and Charlie’s world. I also loved the author’s description of German Angst and the broken dreams left in the wake of World War II. A highly entertaining novel!

It is difficult not to be drawn into the sisters’ lives. "When Lily Ponds Ripple" cast a spell over me. Some chapters depict the sensual magic of the West Indies, others illustrate the sober atmosphere of Germany during the Cold War. Before long, Frankfurt and Royal Palms become protagonists in their own right. Highly entertaining.

The cast of characters in When Lily Ponds Ripple immediately won me over. Not only the sisters, Florence and Charlie, but also Aunt Maggie and Sintina are unforgettable. The collage of different personalities is beautifully fashioned. I actually walked in their shoes. Masterful characterisation.

The story of Charlie and Florence kept me turning pages to see what would happen to them. They are flesh-and-blood creations that hold the reader's interest. Perhaps even better, the secondary characters show nuance and surprising development. In fact, they provide some of the novel's best humor. This story is a tour-de-force and well worth reading.

An entertaining story well told. I was drawn into the sisters’ intense relationships and obsessions. Yes, I walked in their shoes. I also loved Aunt Maggie’s broadmindedness and Sintina’s wit. When Lily Ponds Ripple is full of unforgettable personalities. Wonderful characterisation.

I connected with the cast of When Lily Ponds Ripple from the first chapter. I laughed and cried with them, drank tea on the veranda at Royal Palms and coffee in the Schweizerstrasse. Even the flawed characters cast a spell over me. A gripping book. Vera
I devoured When Lily Ponds Ripple. It brings alive the flavour of Barbados and Germany in the 1970’s and 80’s. After reluctantly turning the last page, I reread certain passages, unwilling to say goodbye to the characters I had grown fond of. This book is better than a warm blanket.”

When Lily Ponds Ripple won me over. I got caught up in Florence’s obsessions and Charlie’s pursuit of fame at the expense of her family. The novel quenched my thirst for an enthralling read with depth.

When Lily Ponds Ripple conjures up aromas that go hand-in-hand with the sisters’ emotional development. It depicts the sensual magic of the West Indies, parallel with the sober atmosphere of Germany during the Cold War. The fictional locations leap from the pages to become actual places. By the end of the book, the Schweizerstrasse and Royal Palms are central characters. I loved this warm-hearted novel.
