The Eye of the Elephant

Poems and illustrations from childhood can have memorable images and sounds which stay with us for a lifetime. Some of the poems have a spiritual quality; a sense of morality and highlight the importance of spending time with loved ones. They also emphasise the value of ‘small things’ and nature. Young people can often express wisdom beyond their years.Naturalistic illustrations are used in contrast to the familiar, brightly coloured, naïve drawings that are currently popular. The gentle calming images aim to complement and reflect the thought-provoking poetry making it suitable for bedtime reading. Either one or more poems can be read depending on time available, age or concentration of the child. Some illustrations are based on observations from nature and firsthand experiences, in and around the southwest of England. In contrast, there is an introduction to wild animals not native to the UK, i.e., elephant, sea eagle and giraffe.Some of the poems aim to encourage children to enjoy and engage with nature and increase their knowledge (i.e., factual inserts in text). It has been noted that children, in general, lack knowledge and experience of the natural world, unlike their predecessors. By seeking to introduce children to nature, outdoor interests, and experiences, it is hoped this in some way may go towards counteracting a sedentary lifestyle and avoid associated health problems. The book looks to encourage adults and children to read together; to discuss, to observe and explore questions that may arise.Information boxes give factual information about nature, animals, and plants to complement the poems.

The Fairies Who Lost Their Powers

The fairies sit together in the glen, where they devise a plan to restore power to some of the fairies who have lost theirs. It is not going to be an easy task, so careful planning is called for.
Sonya, the leader of the group, outlines what has happened to the fairies. Some have lost their sparkle, some their skip, others their jumping skills and some have lost their ability to flip. She knows whose help is needed to restore these powers.
Georgie Grasshopper, Sammy Seal, Skippy the Kangaroo and the fairies, Melanie, Glenda and Rosie will be asked to help Sylvie, Simone and Fay. These are good friends, and Sonya knows they will gladly help out. Losing their powers is something the fairies do not like, and they will be ever so grateful to their friends for helping them. Sometimes all it takes to make things right is a little help from friends. The world looks a brighter place for all when this happens.

Hopefully this story will inspire others to overcome life problems and help those who live in some sort of isolation, like loneliness, to achieve a better and more fulfilling life by working hard to achieve this goal.

The Fish with a Wish

William is sad to see his friends in trouble, caused by the amount of plastic being thrown into our seas and oceans. With the help of Angel Fish, he is given the strength and courage to be able to swim through the ocean to save some of his friends. It doesn't take long before they come across Tommy, Walter and Salty who are all in need of William's help. With a 'splish and a splosh and a splosh and a splish', William becomes the 'fish with a wish'. With all of his might, he manages to save them all so that they are free from the plastic that is making them feel so sad. William would like us all to think about how we can stop plastic being thrown into the sea. Let us all help William and encourage our parents, friends and family to think about how much plastic we buy and how we can recycle it.

The Forest - Part 2 A Friend in Need

As Thomas and Pricilla practice their dance routine for the upcoming Village Talent Competition in the forest while the four large singing oak trees sing for them, they bump into Becky and Cap running around the forest playing soldiers. As the two parties get to know one another and become great friends Thomas is confronted with a big problem with only two weeks left to go till the talent competition.

You see, Pricilla is Thomas’ imaginary friend and Cap, like Pricilla, is Becky’s imaginary friend too.

Only children with imaginary friends can see other children’s imaginary friends and of course the oak trees and animal too.

How will Thomas be able to compete in the competition with Pricilla when no one will be able to see her?

What will he do, and will Becky and Cap be able to help?

The Forest – Big Oak

As Ashton was cycling home from school one autumn day, he heard an almighty sigh coming from the forest, “Aaaahhhhh…” and then a loud crying, sniffling and weeping noise. When he eventually got home after cycling as fast as he could, he asked his daddy, mammy and two big brothers what the noise could have been. They all had suggestions but Ashton knew that they were not the right answers.

With the help of his best friend, Jack, they decided to investigate themselves. Walking through the forest in fear, the two boys stumble upon a very big oak tree crying out loud to himself. After they befriend the big oak tree, they invite their school friends, family and teacher Miss Brownson to join them in decorating the big oak tree for Christmas. Along the way, they make more friends including two crows and get a surprise that happens right beside the big oak tree.

Ashton asked his granny for help as winter was coming. The days are getting colder with snow starting to fall. All of Granny’s friends join her in the forest knitting woolly scarves and jumpers for the big oak trees. There are grannies knitting, laughing and singing everywhere. They are high up and low down with their legs wrapped around the branches holding onto the big oak trees. This is just the start of many more adventures to follow in the forest.
