Penny Meakin, the author of ‘The Meakin Diaries’ will be appearing on the Discovery Channel to mark the One Hundred Year Anniversary of the Battle of the Somme.

In 1915 newlywed Frank Meakin signed up to the new Sheffield City Battalion and joined the fight for King and Country in the First World War. Although diaries were actually forbidden during active service, Frank rebelliously kept one throughout his whole service, from 1915 until he was discharged in 1918, 22 days before his Battalion disbanded.

In The Somme, The First 24 Hours Penny will be interviewed by historian, actor and television presenter Tony Robinson – best known for his role in Blackadder and presenting excavation programme Time Team.

The Somme, The First 24 Hours, produced by Dragonshead Productions, is due to be aired on Friday 1^st July 2016.
