It is International Friendship Day on the 30th July 2025. Friendship Day celebrates the unique bond shared between friends and serves as a reminder of the vital role friendship plays in our lives. The Q&A below is with Stephanie Park the author of An Unlikely Friendship, speaking about how important it is for children to have different friends and how you can find the best of friends in unexpected places.
What inspired the idea of two unlikely friends going on an adventure?
Children love adventure and learn through exploration, they are always thinking of their next adventure and by harnessing that thought process we can teach our children valuable lessons. Creating an adventurous setting allows children to learn new skills and behaviours in a way that is natural and easy to understand.
Why did you choose to focus on themes like courage, discovery, and friendship?
I created positive themes throughout the story because the most interesting children’s stories are those that have an element of uncertainty and adventure, transporting young readers into worlds that challenge their thought process is an important learning tool and an integral part of personal development. Teaching children emotional life skills in an invaluable lesson.
I wanted to challenge myself to write a story that would enchant young people but still be entertaining for the adult/parent who is ultimately reading the story.
Why was it important for the characters to be unlikely friends?
It is important for individuals to learn from a young age that the people we surround ourselves with don’t necessarily have to be from our own tribe, making friends with those who are different from us help us to gain perspectives of all the different people of the world.
How does the adventure strengthen their friendship?
By learning how to trust and have faith in other people we open ourselves up to new experiences and opportunities we may have otherwise missed. We can teach our children to grow their friendship circles and interact with different people.
How do you hope this story helps children understand the value of stepping outside their comfort zone?
I am a strong believer in rising children who will positively impact the world. Focussing stories on positive and beneficial practices help us cultivate compassionate individuals that will make the world a better place. We should always nurture exploration and not allow our children to be afraid to try new things nor allow our surroundings to stifle our personal growth. I hope that my stories will nurture tolerance and foster inclusion.
