Q&A with Crellynn J. Cameron

We caught up with Crellynn J. Cameron for an exciting Q&A session about her debut children's book.

Crellynn grew up by the shores of Lake Macquarie in Australia. She got her Bachelor of Education from the University of Newcastle and then she travelled around the world - London, Abu Dhabi and beyond. Teaching young children in different cultures has been a constant source of inspiration for her stories.

Maybe I Met a Giant is her first picture book, and it beautifully captures the sense of imagination that Crellynn has witnessed throughout her teaching career.

1. Your protagonist seems to be naturally curious, asking big questions about the world. How do you think curiosity shapes a child’s understanding of their environment? What inspired you to write a story that explores a child’s unfiltered wonder, especially when they ask questions as big as "Why does it rain?"

Children wonder about the world with naturally curious minds! Encouraging this excitement for learning shapes every aspect of a child’s understanding of their environment. My inspiration for this story centres around the childhood experiences of the remarkable inventor Nikola Tesla. Tesla’s fascination with electricity as a child led to inventions that still power our world today. A child’s questions can quite literally change the world!

2. Did you face any particular challenges while writing? If so, how did you overcome these and what did you learn in the process?

My stories tend to unfold naturally, almost like fireworks bubbling in the brain! I rarely plan a story beforehand...ideas meander magically during bursts of inspiration.

3. What was your writing process like for this book? Did you outline the plot in detail before you began or did the story unfold as you wrote?

This story flashed in my mind one evening while I was washing my hands...I imagined a giant washing his hands, creating rain! The story followed naturally, inspired by real children’s questions and Tesla’s inventive brilliance.

4. In the story, the giant holds knowledge yet welcomes the little girl’s questions. How do you think stories like this can encourage readers, especially young boys to feel comfortable asking for help or discussing topics like health and emotions?

My story encourages children to be bold in their curiosity! Wonder and learning build strength and resilience. The protagonist’s questions show confidence - a reminder that asking, learning, and imagining are all ways to grow stronger.

5. At the heart of Maybe I Met a Giant is curiosity and wonder. What do you hope young readers take away from it?

I hope my story emboldens creative thinking...wonder stirs the imagination! Children’s love of learning enlivens their wellbeing and nurtures their ability to express themselves. Every child can be a giant in their own adventure through life.
