Born and brought up in Wales, Richard Gault has worked as a university lecturer in Ireland, Scotland and the Netherlands where he now lives with his wife. He taught a range of subjects, particularly the history and philosophy of science and technology. His final paid position was as Principal of the Chisholme Institute, a school of esoteric education located near Hawick in the Scottish Borders. Now retired, he continues to study. He regularly writes book reviews for the online Beshara Magazine. Canoeing, cycling and indeed walking keep him active.
Enjoyable account of a long walking expedition, detailed and full of wonderful imagery and descriptions of places visited along the way.
I haven't finished this book yet, but like to read a few pages every night. Richard chares many of his querky and individual thoughts with the reader, and I can relate to my own thought processes when walking by myself. He also adds a wealth of well researched and surprising facts about Scotland into the daily report. They are like opening a wrapped sweetie and getting surprised. Richard is a genuine person (I have known him for years), and you can trust that he will not share any fake stuff. So those insights give you plenty interesting facts to share in conversation with friends, which not many may know. Written in good, but not too difficult English this book serves me well when I want to relax, a English is not my mother tongue. So I guess that many tourists will love it, too. There are also frequent links to historical and cultural events, peppered with Richards own humour and judgement at times. Am looking forward to the second half of the walk, the second book - soon to come hopefully. Thank you Richard, and thank you publisher!
