Book Description

There comes a time when we all ask ourselves those searching questions: what’s the point, why are we here, what’s it all about?

I’ve thought about it and I think I’ve worked it out: life is a hotel.

You and I are both staying in the hotel along with the other eight billion guests.

Whether you have recently checked in or find yourself sitting in reception with your suitcases ready to leave, we will all experience similar things.

We check in, check out, look at the view from the balcony, discover which floor we are on and inevitably, visit lost property; some of us sign the guestbook and when we ultimately leave, is that it?

What happens next?

Will we ever come back and stay again?

The cover shows the 500 year old cellar in the Hotel Klosterbrau in Seefeld Austria, the inspiration for this book.

Nick Fowler is a child of the sixties, a lover of music, fine wine and the written word. He found himself one day running 26 miles in the New York marathon to the next being diagnosed with MS and ultimately unable to run 26 millimetres. That set him on a journey to discover the meaning of life.

So, move aside Tony Hawks, David Sedaris, Louis Theroux, AA Gill etc etc, I’m loving it!

If you want some insight into why we are all here, then read this book, no answers of course but a very robust romp through the major philosophies and beliefs throughout time. A metaphor that works!

A gentle tour of our time and stay here on our beautiful planet. It explores big questions of the universe, religion and where we might go next but always in an interesting and entertaining way! Thoroughly enjoyed and would recommend!

It took me a little time to sort out where I was, but I suddenly realised that it was the same for everyone. We check in and check out and as time passes we become aware of various events and places. Most of the chapters gently touch us as we pass time. Some dance through the hotel and others hide, but all of them will approach their end. I listened quietly as my grandmother left our world, and I wonder if any of my grandchildren will be with me. Some of this book is amusing and some thought-provoking. There is history and ideas and the future looms good or ghastly. I thought the sixties would last forever. It's just as well it didn't, we'd be worn out, but being a teenager throughout that wonderful decade (1966 World Cup) means that as I check out out I have plenty to remember.

What a book! The ‘Life is a Hotel’ analogy takes a deep dive into the age old meaning of life conversation. All opinions are valid as there are no proven answers and the author’s intelligent exploration of what we know and what we assume is certainly thought provoking and often hilarious. It’s absorbing, hard to put down and one of my best reads in recent years. Can highly recommend.
